Update on the job front

Well I found out earlier this week that my job is safe. That’s a major relief…so now on with my life.

Life Update

It’s been some time since I’ve blogged regularly on here, perhaps I should try to be more diligent about it. Anyway, here’s a quick update on what’s been going on with me…

  • My work is going through a big restructuring which also is leading to job elimination for a good number of people. They announced it 9/11 (great date) and it’s been a little nerve racking not only because people I’ve worked with are being let go, but my job is also up in the air. I think I’m going to be ok, but it’s the not knowing that’s the worst. Supposedly we’ll know something this coming week.
  • School is going well. I’m taking two business courses this semester. I can say that I’m just not a business person. I mean I get the stuff and I ‘m cruising through with a 4.0, but it’s just not my passion. I miss Latin and History.
  • My cellphone ringer decided to stop working on Friday so I had to get a new phone. Luckily I had been with T-Mobile for over a year so I had an upgrade credit. I ended up getting the Moto RIZR in Rose. I have always been a huge fan of Moto phones and this could be one of my favorite yet.

Busy Week

I returned to work this week after taking the first week off of work I’ve had in some time. I have about 300 hours of vacation time if that tells you anything. )

Of course after being gone that long from a position where you’re essentially the only one who does that particular role means that you come back to a lot of things. This was certainly no exception. Good news is that I was able to navigate through all few hundred Lotus Notes and see what I needed to get done.

The really good news is that I got a promotion. Very nice and something I was not necessarily expecting right now so it was a great surprise.

To everyone who e-mailed me this week, I should be getting back to you soon now that things are calming down a bit.

What’s been keeping me busy

Yes, I know it’s been forever since I’ve had a meaningful blog post. Here’s just a small list of what’s been keeping me busy:

  • New furnace
  • Painting the living room, dining room, kitchen, and upstairs bathroom
  • Landscaping, gardening, and general yard work
  • Taking three classes
  • Leading a few huge projects at work that will last through Q1 2008
  • Cathedral council, youth group, and church things
  • My sister’s announced move to Atlanta and her engagement
  • Visting Home Depot, Lowes, Costco, or Target multiple times a day to get things I need
  • Getting a new roof

I’m sure that’s not an all inclusive list, but that’s been my life for the last month. Pictures of some of the finished rooms will be posted soon!

Art and Environment

This is one of the reasons I love my job.

So.Very.Busy.

So I came to my blog and realized I haven’t even posted an entry in the last four weeks. Bad Bryan!

Work’s been crazy busy, this is probably the hardest semester I’ve had in school so far, youth group and choir started again, and we moved.

Today, however, is my relaxing day. I took the day off to go out to lunch and shopping with some friends. I really need to do a better job of taking time off more often…and making sure I don’t check my work email while I’m off.

Email

I know I’ve been bad about blogging recently, but that’s mainly due to the fact I’ve been extraordinarily busy. With school, moving, and my new job at work, I just don’t have much free time left.

My new position at work mainly involves the creation, measurement, and control of external email communications for the company at which I work. It’s not only caused me to dust of old skills but also to learn new ones.

One of the interesting areas I’m starting to delve into is understanding the behavioral characteristics of our email users. Not even so much how they interact with our email messaging but also how the interact with email in general.

How often to they check their mail? What in an email causes them to react? How does the actual text of the message or the visual creative affect the outcome?

What I’m trying to do in essence is take a technology that has been used by the company in the past as a cheap way to disseminate information and turn it into a vital, vibrant information platform that that improves the customer’s experience with our services. To create a revenue generating model of email rather than a simple information source.

While the end goal is not to create blatant marketing emails, it’s not the style or intent of why we use email,it is to create an experience in which the customer considers the service valuable, it will cause them to maintain a relationship with us longer. By being able to customize the experience, it will cause the consumer to investigate other offerings of interest to them.

I know some of this might seem rather boring to most, to me it’s been fascinating. To combine my rusty HTML and graphic skills in developing new email creative with measuring the most minute detail of human email behavior to gain the greatest impact is challenging and exciting.

What Dreams Are Made Of…

Who would have ever thought I would be using Dreamweaver on an almost daily basis for a living? Certainly not me.

New Job

I was offered a new job I was posting for at work. Starting July 10, I’ll be working in the Marketing and Customer Experience group with the fancy sounding title of Experience Process Consultant.

Happy Memorial Day

So I wanted to take a moment and wish everyone a Happy Memorial Day! Boy it’s been a while since I’ve posted on here, but it’s always easy to forget when life gets busy.

Let’s see what have I been up to. Took my finals for my first 2 classes, got A’s in the classes. Yay me! Work has been extra busy lately with all the new responsibilities I have because of my project. I had the flu. My first summer class started this week, it’s a super-accelerated 5-week course that is kicking my butt, my 2 other summer classes don’t start until the middle of June.

I also want to wish Ryan a happy birthday!

I noticed yesterday that people that walk around with those stupid bluetooth headsets on annoy the hell out of me. Why do you need them in, are you really that important? I mean there were people even wearing them while they were eating. I’ve decided that I will just refuse to acknowledge anyone who tries to talk to me while wearing one of those things. )
