I was always a big fan of the Dark is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper when I was growing up. The books were just amazing fantasy, not as good as Tolkien of course, but good none the less. So I was excited to learn that a movie was coming out based on the series.
Of course after viewing the trailer, I will not be seeing the movie. It looks to me as if they took the name and maybe 5% of the concept of the book and turned it into something completely different and horrible. How disappointing.
On the other hand, Get Smart looks like it will be an awesome movie…
A few months back I started reading The New Republic and have very much enjoyed the thoughtful, well written articles. It is a more liberal magazine but I find the stories to be very balanced, well presented, and thought provoking.
I decided to take a chance and start reading The Nation. What a huge mistake that was. While both could be classified as “liberal” magazines that’s as far as the comparisons go. Where TNR is balanced and thought provoking The Nation is simply partisan, attack politics which is so over blown with hyperbole and extreme positions that it destroys its own credibility.
I have cancelled my subscription after my first, and thankfully free, issue.
For anyone who actually knows me, I’m sure that you’re actually just as shocked as I am that I’m reading The New Republic.
