The expense of homeownership

Having never owned a home before, there are so many things that need to be purchased. Lawn and garden equipment, home maintenance tools, and more furniture top the list.

This weekend Adam and I went shopping for a new washer and dryer. The house currently has them, but they’re old and we really wanted a more efficient front loading washer. We got an outstanding deal at Home Depot with delivery scheduled soon after we move in.

Staying in the realm of being environmentally friendly, we purchased an electric lawn mower. It’s smaller, but it’s perfect for our yard which itself is small. It also means less hassle than dealing with gas and oil, less polution from exhaust, and it’s so much quieter.

It’s amazing to think of all the other things that we still need to buy. Luckily I had considered all this earlier, but it’s easy to see how people can get in over their heads if they don’t think about it.

Spring is coming

Daylight saving time is here, three weeks early. I absolutely love when we get to move the clocks forward an hour. There’s just something about having that extra daylight in the evening that makes me feel happy. Perhaps it’s the anticipation of Spring.

Only 4 weeks until we move into our new house and still so much to do to get ready.

Go Zero Carbon

With all the danger of global warming and dwindling energy supplies, it’s good to see a multitude of innovative organizations sprouting up to help individuals and businesses do something about it. This is especially true considering the government seems to be in neutral on the issue.

Carbonfund.orgCarbonfund.org is one such group. You can make a yearly donation which will allow you to offset your personal carbon impact. Of course since Carbonfund.org is also a registered non-profit, your contribution is tax deductible and often eligible for employer matching programs.

I’m proud to say that Adam and I made a contribution to offset our carbon usage for a year and plan to do so going forward. Reducing your impact where possible and offsetting what you can’t is one small step in the long journey against global warming.

Visits galore

Two weeks ago, Adam’s brother Eric and his girlfriend Kristen were in town for a visit. Eric also had an interview for Case School of Medicine.

Of course the Cleveland Museum of Art was still closed, but Adam, Kristen, and I went to go see the Monet exhibit. We visited the West Side Market and had many great meals.

This weekend Adam’s college friend Dave and his wife Olivia came to visit on their way to Indiana. We played alot of Wii tennis, bowling, and golf. It’s amazing how a video game can make your arm sore. )
