It’s definitely winter

This week has been absolutely frigid, winter has definitely arrived. I miss those 55ยบ days in December.

I’m starting to get more excited as it gets closer to closing on the house. Even though we won’t be moving for a month after closing, it will be a relief just to be done with all the paperwork. Once that’s done I’ll be able to relax and begin packing for the move.

The hard part will be picking the colors to paint a few of the rooms. Oh and learn how to paint since I’ve never done that before.

Ah, yes. Painting. I’ve been painting my house for 7 years and I’m still not finished!

Here are a couple of pointers though:

    1) Mask only what is necessary. If you master “cutting in”, then you won’t have to worry about wasting prep time masking everything in sight

    2) Unless your walls are perfect in everyway, opt for the low sheen or “flat” versions of the paint color you’ve chosen. All glossy surfaces (even those labeled low sheen) often accentuate wall imperfections. The only exception to this rule should be the bathroom, as low gloss paint does not do very well in areas where there’s steam

    3) Choosing the right paint color is an excercise in patience. What you see in the store will *never* look the same in your own house. I would advise you look into brands that sell pint size samples (around $3 or so). There are quart versions as well, but they’re double the cost. The best vendors for the smaller samples are Benjamin Moore or Restoration Hardware.

    4) Speaking of Restoration Hardware, you really can’t go wrong with their color choices. If you are indecisive, you should check out their collection. Their selection is much smaller than Benjamin Moore, but almost every color is just perfect. In particular, their “Silver Sage” simply rocks. That color is also their signature color in all stores. You’ll find it painted there on every wall. That will give you a good impression of whether you like it or not.

    Hope this helps…

Awesome, thanks for the tips! I was planning on going to Sherwin Williams where they sell the samples as well to try a few different colors out to see what I liked.

I didn’t know that Restoration Hardware sold paint, I’ll have to check them out.
