I’ve been buying Smucker’s natural peanut butter the last few times I’ve gone to the grocery store. You know, the kind where the oil separates and you have to mix it up yourself. I love it, but there is one thing I don’t like and that’s needing to store it in the refrigerator. I just hate cold peanut butter.
Well I began wondering if it was really necessary to keep it in there after opening so I went to the Smucker’s website and e-mailed the question to their customer service team. Within one hour of sending it, someone called me at home with the response. I was amazed at how responsive they were.
And the answer is no, you don’t have to keep it stored in the refrigerator.
What coincidence. Tonight I bought some celery & Peter Pan reduced fat p-butter for my snacking enjoyment. My first peanut butter purchase in a long, long time. My next pick will be some of that Smucker’s stuff, to be sure.
They’ll never wanna experience another slow day after my peanut butter questions.
I’ve been buying Laura Scudder’s natural peanut butter for years, actually. My main wish is to buy peanut butter in which the ingredients list says: “peanuts and salt, that’s all.”
I’ve never seen Smucker’s peanut butter.
My main problem with natural peanut butter sold in a jar is that when you do stir it up for the first time, the jar is full and the peanut oil spills all over the counter.
I’m irritated at Costco — my usual supermarket — because they used to sell 3 kinds of peanut butter: Jif regular, Jif nutty and Laura Scudder’s. They’ve discontinued the Laura Scudder’s and have instead added their own private label of “organic” peanut butter. I have to say that it tastes really good, but I don’t like it containing “organic sugar” and “organic palm oil”. I wrote Costco about this and they said that they added the sugar so that children would like it and they added the palm oil because it is a natural way to stablize it so that you don’t have to stir it. The word “refrigerate” is nowhere to be found on the jar. Still, I would prefer peanuts and salt only.
I wasn’t intending to be a regular participant on your blog comments, but I do feel pasionate about peanut butter. It’s one of my main sources of protein besides tuna and chicken.
This is good to know - Smucker’s natural is the only kind of PB we get and we’ve always kept it in the fridge (I agree, cold PB is not cool). One of the things I like about this Smucker’s version of natural PB is that it doesn’t seem to separate as much as other kinds. Maybe I should ask them how they do it.
Justin: You can just keep those experiences to yourself
Bryan: Glad to have you post again, thanks for visiting! As for the peanut butter the Smuckers Natural only lists peanuts and salt as the ingredients so you’d be in luck. As for stirring up the oil, I hate that also but Adam had a good solution. Simply pour out part of the oil into another dish and mix what’s left. When that’s done add in the rest for a mess free mixing.
Dave: Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to look for that next time I’m needing pb.
