I’m a plumber!

Over the last two weeks the toilet in our apartment has been constantly running and then refilling and running and refilling. On top of that, over the last few days the handle has started to crack inside and no longer worked.

While we did fill out a maintainence request to have it fixed I’ve more than learned my lesson with the slumlords that own this building. Basically if they even came and fixed it, it would be a month or two so I decided to take matters into my own hands and fix it myself.

Now anyone who knows me can tell you that I am by far the least handy person there is out there. I mean I’d take my car to the dealership to put new windshield washer fluid in. But in this case I was determined to figure it out to save my own sanity.

I am happy to report that I successfully managed to replace the handle and flapper assembly and our toilet is once again happy.

Fix the toilet

However, that is far from the whole story. What Bryan conveniently left out was the part where he cut the first flapper apart even though it shouldn’t have been and sent me back to the Home Depot to buy another. The toilet is fixed now though.

Odd you should mention this cause I’m now a bonafide expert in toilet repair!

I had a similar situation where the flapper on our tank would start running water even after multiple replacements.

Turns out that toilet tank cleaners actually deteriorate most toilet flappers out on the market today. Only flappers made from Chlorazone® are chemical resistant.

Gosh, I’m sounding like a true plumber. -)

Armen: I read that when I was researching how to replace it on the net. The one Adam bought is made from Chlorazone so hopefully that won’t be an issue. And we’re only here for another 6 months so that’s as long as it needs to last. )

I also replaced this recently. I am, however, disappointed in the length of the chain. I now have to hold down the handle for three seconds or the toilet does not fill and flush properly. Any tips on that?

I had that same issue, but I shortened the chain a few rings and now it works totally fine.

Oh so I need to shorten it, NOT lengthen it. Sweet.

Absolutely, I thought the same thing at first, but shorter is better I guess.
